Course Description

Building up colleagues and raising the bar for future generations of interpreters is important work. There are a multitude of ways to do this work, teaching, mentoring, teaming, and now, coaching. Coaching is distinct from mentoring in that it focuses on the self-directed development of the client, not necessarily on you passing along all the information & wisdom you have gleaned in your years of experience, though those experiences will come in handy as a coach. In this workshop, you will develop a coaching style all your own using tools, strategies, and approaches from the coaching profession. Specifically, we will delve into coaching with a mentoring mindset, exploring the why, what and hows of coaching interpreters as a part of their induction into the field. Coaching serves a distinct purpose from mentoring, and yet our mentoring experience can support our coaching work. It takes intentional practice, just like interpreting to develop distinct coaching and mentoring skills for various audiences.s. Through coaching you will bring an additional layer of tools, reframes, and mindsets that will help you to be present with colleagues in their process and walk with them through the journey of development.
